CCO is proud to recognize a candidate that has been certified with CCO Certification for 30 years! John Owen, a seasoned crane operator with Maxim Crane, has officially become CCO’s first ever 6-Star operator. As one of the very first candidates to become certified after CCO’s inception in January 1995, John has now maintained his certification for 30 years. This milestone for John is an extraordinary demonstration of his commitment to safety in the industry. His achievement reflects CCO’s mission to elevate industry standards through accredited certification, making the profession safer for operators and everyone on the jobsite.

Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, John began his career with RH Marlin, where he worked for 16 years before joining Maxim Crane Works, L.P., a crane rental and lifting solution companies in North America. Now, with nearly two decades at Maxim, John has accumulated an impressive 36 years in the crane industry! Throughout his career, John has contributed to a wide range of projects gaining extensive hands-on experience. John noted that many operators he has worked alongside also remain in the field long term, describing crane operation as “a career for life.”

When reflecting on his career, John recalls that one of his most memorable projects was operating at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts. He also proudly remembers his role in constructing the arena for the Indianapolis Pacers, two landmark projects that stand out as major highlights of his career. John credits his early decision to become certified as a pivotal moment in his professional journey. While working at RH Marlin, he recalls his boss encouraging the crew, saying, “You better jump on this and get your certifications, because this is the future of where the industry is heading and how operators will be getting jobs.” Looking back, John says his boss was right. “Today, you can’t operate a crane without your certification,” he adds. John emphasizes the importance of maintaining certification and is grateful to have been encouraged to get certified early in his career. He credits that decision with helping him enjoy many successful years in the industry.

Now considered a veteran in the industry, John often finds opportunities to share his experience with newer operators just starting their careers. He offers this advice, “It’s okay to be scared. You know what I mean? You have butterflies in your belly, because that way you’re questioning yourself if you’re doing something right.” John also emphasizes the importance of hands-on operating experience, especially in an era where technology plays a growing role in crane operation. “Operators can’t learn everything they need to know just from the computer,” he explains. “These days, cranes are equipped with computers to assist operators, but you can’t rely too much on that to keep you safe. Operating different kinds of cranes and gaining hands-on experience over the years is what makes a good operator a great one.”

Outside of operating, John enjoys spending time with his wife and children and collecting RC cars and model cranes. He enjoys attending his children’s sporting events, trying new restaurants, and staying connected with friends. John continues to hold operating close to his heart, taking great pride in his work and deeply valuing the role CCO Certification has played in his career over the years.

Congratulations to John on reaching this remarkable milestone. His experience stands as a testament to his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to safety. Having maintained his certification for 30 years, John exemplifies the very best of what CCO represents. Thank you, John, for being a difference maker in the industry and for your commitment to maintaining your certification!
